Simonetti Pickups
Like The Simonetti Bridge System, Simonetti pickups have evolved over the years to offer a wide variety of tonal options. After a few years of R&D my original standard pickups used a steel bar over ceramic magnets with a coil size between a standard P and J pickup. using 2 full sized coils i could use them as single coil pickups or wire 2 together as a humbucker. At the suggestion of a customer, I tried neodymium magnets in lieu of the ceramic magnets and was pleased enough with the results that I switched to Neodymium magnets for all of my pickups. Always wound hot these pickups have much more output than most other passive pickups and most people who use them with a preamp rarely use the preamp. Completely wrapped in copper shielding these are some of the quietest passive pickups on the market.
Over time I started experimenting with different coils sizes and using pole pieces instead of a bar. This led to an expansion of the types of pickups available for Simonetti Basses.
The standard Simonetti Humbucker is still a bar magnet over neodymium magnets with a coil size between a P and J. This type of pickup gives a neutral tone between the 2 and focuses more on the fundamental (sustain of the note) as the magnetic field is continuous. This allows for a longer sustain and decay of the note.
Another option is a shorter, wider coil with a bar or large diameter pole pieces directly under the string. This is a much boomier sound with the bar giving the even sustain and the pole pieces lending a much more aggressive growl. These are quickly becoming my most popular pickup options.
Another option is the traditional dual pole pieces at either side if the string with a narrower, taller coil. This lends a brighter tone and focuses more on the attack (inititial pluck) of the string and ads an old school vibe to the tone.
As with the bridge system these pickups are customizable to suite your tastes using different magnets and coil sizes.
